WHAT IS HYDRONEPHROSIS ?

- Hydronephrosis is a condition where there is swelling or enlargement of the kidneys due to the build-up of urine. This can be caused by various factors, such as a blockage in the urinary tract, kidney stones, or other underlying health issues.

CAUSES OF HYDRONEPHROSIS :

Hydronephrosis can be caused by several factors, including:

1. Kidney stones: Obstructing stones can block the flow of urine.
2. Urinary tract obstruction: Any obstruction, such as tumors or an enlarged prostate, can prevent urine from draining properly.
3. Pregnancy: The growing uterus can sometimes compress the urinary tract.
4. Congenital abnormalities: Some individuals may be born with structural issues in the urinary tract that lead to hydronephrosis.
5. Infections: Inflammation and swelling from urinary tract infections can contribute.
6. Blood clots: Clots can obstruct the urinary tract and cause hydronephrosis.
7. Neurogenic bladder dysfunction: Conditions affecting nerve signals to the bladder can lead to problems with emptying.

SYMPTOMS OF HYDRONEPHROSIS :

1. Flank or back pain: Discomfort in the side or back due to kidney swelling.
2. Urinary issues: Changes in urination patterns, urgency, or frequency.
3. Abdominal pain: Pain or pressure in the abdomen.
4. Nausea and vomiting: Possible symptoms if hydronephrosis is severe.
5. Fever or chills: Signs of infection if hydronephrosis is related to an underlying issue like a urinary tract infection.
6. Hematuria: Presence of blood in the urine may occur.

TYPES OF HYDRONEPHROSIS :

1. Obstructive Hydronephrosis: This occurs when there is a blockage in the urinary tract, preventing the normal flow of urine. Causes can include kidney stones, tumors, an enlarged prostate, or congenital abnormalities.
2. Non-obstructive Hydronephrosis: In this type, there isn't a physical blockage, but urine is not effectively cleared from the kidneys. This can result from conditions like vesicoureteral reflux (where urine flows backward from the bladder to the kidneys) or neurogenic bladder dysfunction.

RISK FACTORS FOR HYDRONEPHROSIS :

Several factors can increase the risk of developing hydronephrosis, including:

1. Kidney stones: Presence of stones in the urinary tract can lead to obstruction.
2. Enlarged prostate: In men, an enlarged prostate can obstruct urine flow.
3. Pregnancy: Pressure from the growing uterus can contribute to urinary tract obstruction.
4. Urinary tract infections: Infections can cause inflammation and swelling, potentially leading to obstruction.
5. Congenital abnormalities: Individuals born with structural issues in the urinary tract may be at higher risk.
6. Tumors: Both benign and malignant tumors can block the urinary tract.
7. Neurological conditions: Disorders affecting nerve function to the bladder may increase the risk.
8. Bladder dysfunction: Conditions causing poor bladder emptying can contribute.
