HYPERPIGMENTATION

DEFINITION

HYPERPIGMENTATION is a common skin condition characterized by the darkening of certain area of the skin . The darkening occurs due to an excess production of melanin , the pigment that gives skin its color.

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by various factors including:

·   Sun exposure : ultraviolet (UV)rays from the sun can stimulate the production of melanin , leading to darkening of the skin.

·   Melanoma  

·   Skin conditions : certain skin conditions , such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis can lead to hyper pigmentation.

·   Medications : certain medications such as (NSAIDs ), antimalarial drugs etc. can cause hyper pigmentation as a side effect.

·   Melasma in pregnancy

·   Hormonal changes : hormonal fluctuations , such as those that occur during pregnancy (melasma or pregnancy mask)or due to hormonal therapies

·  Skin injuries : inflammation or injury to the skin ,such as acne , cuts or burns can trigger an increase in melanin production, resulting in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.


SYMPTOMS OF HYPERPIGMENTATION

Hyper pigmentation is occur in the form of patches and varies in shape and size .

Common symptoms include:

 Pigmentation patches on the skin.

 Dark -coloured  sunspots on the skin.

 Discolouration of the skin around the eyes ,mouth, lips and nose.

 Scars or marks that are usually in a straight line.

 Inflamed skin or skin that is tender to the touch.

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT

According to ayurveda an imbalance of Pitta and Vata can cause skin pigmentation.

Herbal Remedies

Neem

Neem has its antibacterial and antifungal properties . It helps cleanse the skin , reduce dark spots and promote a clear complexion.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera known for its soothing properties help reduce hyper pigmentation 

Manjistha

Manjistha is an ayurvedic herb that is blood purifier

Licorice extract

Licorice contains glabridin which has been shown to lighten skin and reduce hyper pigmentation.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains  curcumin  which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties .

Vitamin C

Vitamin C in many fruits and vegetables . It help brighten the skin and reduce hyper pigmentation.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps in repairing damaged skin and neutralizes the effect of UV radiation.

Tomato

Tomato is a natural ingredient that helps to reduce the production of melanin in your skin.

Papaya

Papaya help to reduce the production of melanin in your skin and give you healthy , glowing skin.

DIETARY CHANGES

1. Avoid having foods that are excessively sour, salty and spicy .

2. Avoid consuming extremely hot or cold foods

3. Eat a variety of fresh fruits , leafy green vegetables , legumes .

Lifestyle practices

1. Avoid prolonged sun exposure.

2. Protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure by wearing sunscreen , hats , clothing .

3. Dehydrated skin is more prone to skin pigmentation. So drink 8-10 glasses of water every day.

4. An adequate amount of sleep allows the body to repair and rejuvenate the skin.

5. Practising yoga , meditation and deep breathing exercises.
