YEAST INFECTION

A yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, typically Candida albicans.

TYPES OF YEAST INFECTION-

There are several types of yeast infections:

  • Vaginal Yeast Infection: This is the most common type and affects the vaginal area. It can cause itching, burning, white discharge, and discomfort.
  • Oral Thrush: This type affects the mouth and throat, leading to white patches on the tongue and inside the cheeks.
  • Skin Yeast Infection: It can occur in skin folds, like under the breasts or in the groin area, causing redness, itching, and rash.
  • Invasive Candidiasis: This is a severe form that affects the bloodstream and internal organs, often in individuals with weakened immune systems.

CAUSES OF YEAST INFECTION-

Common causes of yeast infections include:

  • Imbalance in the vaginal micro biome: Hormonal changes, antibiotic use, or a weakened immune system can disrupt the balance of microorganisms in the vagina, allowing yeast to overgrow.
  • Warm and moist environments: Yeast thrives in warm and damp conditions, making areas like the vagina, mouth, and skin folds susceptible to infections.

SYMPTOMS OF YEAST INFECTION-

The symptoms of a yeast infection can vary depending on the type and location of the infection. Here are common symptoms associated with different types of yeast infections:

  • Vaginal Yeast Infection:
  • Itching and irritation in the vaginal area
  • Burning sensation, especially during urination or sexual intercourse
  • White, thick, and clumpy vaginal discharge, often described as resembling cottage cheese
  • Swelling and redness of the vulva (the external genital area)

Oral Thrush:

  • Creamy, white lesions on the tongue, inner cheeks, or the roof of the mouth
  • Soreness and difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of taste

Skin Yeast Infection:

  • Red, itchy rash in skin folds, such as under the breasts, in the groin, or between the fingers and toes
  • Rash may have raised, pimple-like bumps.

Invasive Candidiasis (systemic infection):

  • Fever and chills.
  • Fatigue
  • Pain in various organs, depending on where the infection has spread (e.g., abdominal pain in cases of abdominal organ involvement)

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF YEAST INFECTION-

In Ayurved, yeast infections, often referred to as “kandu Roga,” are considered a result of an imbalance in the doshas, primarily Pitta and kapha.

Ayurvedic medicine offers several natural remedies for yeast infections, focusing on balancing the body's doshas and addressing the root causes. Here are some Ayurvedic treatments and practices:

  • Dietary Changes: Follow an Ayurvedic diet that balances your dosha. Reducing sugar, dairy, and refined carbohydrates is often recommended, as these can aggravate the infection.
  • Herbal Remedies: Ayurveda suggests the use of herbs like neem, amla, haritaki, and turmeric, known for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. They can be consumed as supplements or applied topically.
  • Yogic Asana: Yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) can help improve overall health and strengthen the immune system, which can be essential in preventing and managing yeast infections.
  • Oil Pulling: This involves swishing oil, often coconut or sesame oil, in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. Some believe it can help with oral thrush, a yeast infection in the mouth.
  • Ayurvedic Cleansing: Panchakarma, a series of Ayurvedic detoxification procedures, can help remove toxins from the body and balance doshas.
  • Triphala: Triphala, an herbal preparation, is used to cleanse the digestive system and support overall health, potentially aiding in yeast infection prevention.

NATURAL TREATMENT OF YEAST INFECTION-

Natural treatments for yeast infections can be effective in some cases. Here are a few remedies you can try:

  • Yogurt: Applying plain, unsweetened yogurt to the affected area can help restore the balance of healthy bacteria.
  • Garlic: Garlic has antifungal properties. You can consume it in your diet or use garlic paste topically.
  • Tea tree oil: Diluted tea tree oil can be used as a topical treatment for yeast infections, but be cautious with its potency.
  • Coconut oil: Applying coconut oil to the affected area can help alleviate symptoms.
  • Dietary changes: Reducing sugar and refined carbohydrates in your diet can help prevent yeast infections.
