ANEMIA

WHAT IS ANEMIA ?

Anemia is a medical condition characterized by a lower than normal number of red blood cells or a lower than normal amount of hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that helps transport oxygen to the body's tissues. Anemia can result in symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and shortness of breath, as the body may not be getting enough oxygen.

CAUSES OF ANEMIA :

Anemia can have various causes :
  1. Iron-deficiency anemia: This is the most common type of anemia and is often caused by a lack of sufficient iron in the diet, poor iron absorption, blood loss (e.g. through heavy menstrual periods or gastrointestinal bleeding) or increased iron needs (e.g. during pregnancy).
  2. Vitamin-deficiency anemia: Deficiencies in essential vitamins like vitamin B12 (pernicious anemia) and folic acid can lead to anemia.
  3. Chronic diseases: Some chronic conditions, such as chronic kidney disease, inflammatory disorders, and certain cancers, can interfere with the production of red blood cells and lead to anemia.
  4. Hemolytic anemia: These result from the destruction of red blood cells, either due to inherited conditions, autoimmune disorders, or certain medications and toxins.
  5. Aplastic anemia: In this rare condition, the bone marrow fails to produce an adequate number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
  6. Sickle cell anemia: An inherited genetic disorder where red blood cells are abnormally shaped, leading to their destruction and a decreased ability to carry oxygen.
  7. Thalassemia: A group of inherited blood disorders that affect the production of hemoglobin.
  8. Bone marrow disorders: Conditions like myelo-dysplastic syndrome and leukemia can disrupt the normal production of blood cells.
  9. Blood loss: Acute bleeding from injuries, surgery or gastrointestinal bleeding can result in anemia.
  10. Chronic alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol use can lead to vitamin deficiencies that contribute to anemia.

TYPES OF ANEMIA :

  1. Iron-deficiency anemia
  2. Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia (Pernicious anemia)
  3. Folate deficiency anemia
  4. Hemolytic anemia
  5. Sickle cell anemia
  6. Thalassemia
  7. Aplastic anemia
  8. Chronic diseases anemia
  9. Normocytic anemia
  10. Macrocytic anemia

SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA :

  1. Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or weak, even with adequate rest.
  2. Pale skin: Anemia can cause a paler complexion.
  3. Weakness: Muscles may feel weak and less capable of physical exertion.
  4. Shortness of breath: Difficulty catching your breath, even during mild physical activity.
  5. Dizziness or lightheadedness: Anemia can lead to a decreased supply of oxygen to the brain.
  6. Cold hands and feet: Poor circulation and reduced oxygen delivery to extremities can result in colder sensations.
  7. Headaches: Anemia may cause frequent or severe headaches.
  8. Irritability: Changes in mood and irritability can occur.
  9. Chest pain: In more severe cases, anemia may lead to chest pain or angina.
  10. Cognitive difficulties: Difficulty concentrating and memory problems can be related to anemia.
  11. Brittle nails and hair: Changes in the texture and strength of nails and hair.
  12. Swelling of the tongue or mouth: In some cases, anemia can cause glossitis (inflammation of the tongue) or mouth sores.
