Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is a medical condition in which pain associated with menstruation. This condition happens because your uterus contracts to shed its lining. It may be primary or secondary. In primary dysmenorrhea occurs with recurrent pain with no identifiable cause. Secondary dysmenorrhea occurs results from conditions like endometriosis. Mild to moderate menstrual cramping is normal, but in some people severe pain occurs during their period that interferes with their daily activities and prevents them from doing things they enjoy.

What is the cause of Dysmenorrhea?

Menstrual cramps can be caused by-

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Cervical stenosis

During your menstrual period your uterus contracts to help expel its lining, hormones like substances involved in pain and inflammation trigger the uterine muscle contractions. High levels of prostaglandins associated with more severe menstrual cramps.

Symptoms of menstrual cramp-

  • Dull continuous ache
  • Pain that radiates to your back and thighs
  • Throbbing or cramping pain in your lower abdomen that can be intense
  • Pain starts 1 to 3 days before your period peaks 24 hours after the onset of your period and subsides in 2 to 3 days
  • Other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness and headaches, loose stools

Risk Factors –

You might be at risk of menstrual cramps if –

  • You started puberty early at age 11 or younger
  • You are younger than age 30
  • You bleed heavily during periods
  • You have irregular menstrual bleeding
  • You have a family history of menstrual cramps
  • Smoking

Prevention-

  • Exercise regularly
  • Use heat
  • Try dietary supplements
  • Reduce stress
  • Get enough sleep and rest

Management of Dysmenorrhea according to Ayurveda-

In Ayurveda Dysmenorrhea is classified as a Kashtartava .This condition occurs due to the aggravation of vata and pitta dosha. Vata dosha is governs the movement of menstrual blood out of the body and Apana vata is a vata that moves downward and out of the pelvic floor.
