Jaundice

Definition:

Jaundice is a medical condition characterized by the yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and whites of the eyes (sclera) due to elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. When bilirubin levels rise, it can accumulate in the body's tissues, leading to the characteristic yellow discoloration seen in jaundice.

Causes of Jaundice:

Jaundice can be caused by various underlying conditions, including:

  • Liver Diseases: Conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure can impair the liver's ability to process bilirubin, leading to jaundice.
  • Hemolytic Disorders: Certain disorders, such as hemolytic anemia or conditions that cause rapid breakdown of red blood cells, can result in increased bilirubin production and jaundice.
  • Obstruction of the Bile Ducts: Blockage or obstruction of the bile ducts, which carry bile (a fluid produced by the liver) from the liver to the intestines, can prevent the excretion of bilirubin, leading to jaundice. This obstruction can be due to gallstones, tumors, or other conditions.
  • Gilbert's Syndrome: A benign and relatively common condition characterized by mild elevations in bilirubin levels due to a deficiency in an enzyme that helps process bilirubin.

Symptoms of Jaundice:

In addition to the characteristic yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes, other symptoms of jaundice may include:

  • Yellowing of the Skin, Eyes, and Mucous Membranes
  • Dark Urine
  • Pale Stools
  • Itching (Pruritus Abdominal Pain)
  • Fatigue
