Menopause is a condition in which a female has gone 12 months without a menstrual period. It is a natural progression in the ageing process and marks the end of your reproductive age. The average age when menopause occurs is around the age of 50. The time leading to the menopause is called perimenopause and this is when females start transitioning into menopause. In this phase they notice the fluctuations in their menstrual cycle and have symptoms such as hot flashes.
The three stages of Menopause
The menopause which is natural marks the end of reproductive life. It is a gradual process and happens in three stages:
- Perimenopause: It can begin even 8 to 10 years before the actual menopause. Here, the ovaries gradually start producing less estrogen starting from your 40's. In the last one to two years of perimenopause, the drop of estrogen levels in the body is accelerated. At this time women start experiencing menopausal symptoms but are still menstruating and can get pregnant.
- Menopause: Menopause is a time when females stop having menstrual cycles. The ovaries stop producing eggs and estrogen at this stage. You are then diagnosed with menopause when you've gone without menopause for 12 consecutive months.
- Postmenopause: After you haven't had your period for an entire year it is now considered to be postmenopausal phase of your life. During this time the menopausal symptoms like hot flashes may get better although some people might continue to feel menopausal symptoms for many years. The estrogen levels are lower in post menopausal phase which makes the person more susceptible to certain conditions like osteoporosis.
REASONS FOR MENOPAUSE
Natural menopause is a normal part of ageing and is defined as a complete year without menstrual cycle. Along with increasing age the cycle begins to slow down. As the menopause nears, ovaries start producing less estrogen. This results in changes in menstrual cycle which eventually becomes irregular and stops.
Along with this there are also physical changes in the body because of the adaptation to different levels of hormones. The symptoms that you experience during each stage of menopause are all part of the body's adjustment to these changes.

ROLE OF AYURVEDA IN MENOPAUSE
According to Ayurveda, there occurs dosha imbalance during menopause. It is not a disease but changes in body with increasing age. Vata and pitta dosha get imbalanced during menopause. Due to reduced digestive fire, there occurs accumulation of ama or toxins inside the body. The ayurvedic herbs help in pacification of doshas and increases digestive fire. This leads to decrease in symptoms.
