Role of Ayurveda in Infertility

Infertility is defined as a condition of not being able to get pregnant after one year of unprotected sex. The problem of infertility is very common nowadays. Infertility occurs may be due to male or female factors. Types of infertility –include- Primary infertility 2. Secondary infertility 3. Unexplained infertility

  1. Primary infertility- in this condition you have never been pregnant and cannot conceive after one year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
  2. Secondary infertility- in this condition you cannot get pregnant again after having at least one successful pregnancy.
  3. Unexplained infertility- in this type fertility testing has not found a reason that a person or couple is unable to get pregnant.

 Causes in males-

the common causes of infertility in males are following-

  • Abnormal production or function of sperm
  • A medical condition, this could be a testicular infection, surgery or cancer.
  • Ejaculation disorders, if the ejaculatory ducts are blocked, semen may be ejaculated in to the bladder.
  • Chromosomal disorders
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis
  • Injury to your scrotum or testicles
  • Low testosterone
  • Sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction premature ejaculation
  • Prior surgical vasectomy
  • Dietary factors and behavioral factors
  • Radiation therapy or chemotherapy

Causes of Infertility in Female-

  • Problems with the uterus, this includes polyps, fibroids
  • PCOS- polycystic ovary syndrome causes a hormonal imbalance which affects ovulation. It is the most common cause of female infertility.
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency
  • Too much prolactin
  • Damage to fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis

Risk factors for female infertility-

Many factors can increase infertility in women’s. Genetic traits, lifestyle habits, and age can contribute to female infertility. More factors can include:

  • Hormone issue that prevents ovulation
  • Age
  • Abnormal menstrual cycle
  • Obesity
  • Endometriosis
  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Auto immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid gland diseases
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Primary ovary Insufficiency

Risk factors of male infertility

  • excessive alcohol use
  • tobacco use
  • being overweight or being underweight

Prevention of infertility

Have regular intercourse several times around the time of ovulation

  • for Men infertility- avoid drug and tobacco use and drinking too much alcohol
  • Avoid high temperatures found in hot tubs and hot bath as they can affect sperm production
  • Limit medications that impact fertility
  • Exercise moderately
  • For women infertility number of strategies may increase the chances of becoming pregnant-
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs
  • Quit smoking
  • Limit caffeine
  • Avoid weight extremes
  • Exercise moderately

Management of infertility according to ayurveda

According to Ayurveda , infertility occurs when Shukra Dhatu , which produces eggs in women and sperms in men is weak due to lack of proper nutrition or due to poor digestion ,or due to the presence of ama in the body.

Infertility in Ayurveda has described as Vandhyatwa – failure to achieve conception by a couple of mature age, having normal intercourse during an appropro

Ayurvedic herbs for infertility

  • Ashoka
  • Shatavari
  • Lodhra
  • Gokshura
  • These ayurvedic herbs used for conceiving, improving egg quality and other inferitility problems in women.
  • Also recommends a diet rich in food items like milk, ghee, almonds and sesame to improve health and enhance levels of Shukra Dhatu in the body

Panchkarma treatment of infertility

A few panchkarma treatment for  infertility are-

  • Basti
  • Shodhna
  • Chikitsa( cleansing therapy)
  • Uttar Basti is the procedure where the enema is administered through the urethral or vaginal route . These procedures help to eliminate the toxins from the body and help to correct ovarian , uterine and tubular problems causing infertility. Basti strengthen the reproductive system removes the toxins from the body and increases the chances of conception.

Yoga and exercise

The following yoga asana helpful in this condition

  • Bhujangasana
  • Padmasana
  • Paschimottanaasana
