When your vein walls are weak and your valves are not working right, blood backs up in your vein and this causes the blue and purple bulges on your legs feet and ankles. It mostly affects the veins in the legs that are because of standing and walking increase the pressure in the veins of the lower body. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but they are smaller. Spider veins occur on the legs but can also be found on the face, they vary in size and often look like a spider’s web
Causes of Varicose veins-
This condition occurs when walls of your veins weaken, as your blood pressure in vein increases the weakened walls allow your vein to get bigger, as your vein stretches the valves that keep blood moving in one direction in your vein can not work like they should Vein walls and valves can become weak for several reasons including-
- The aging process
- Hormones
- Excess weight
- Restrictive clothing
- Pressure inside the vein from standing for long periods
Risk factors –
The following can increase the risk of developing varicose veins-
- Pregnancy
- Age – aging causing wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help control blood flow, wear causes the valves to allow some blood to flow back into the veins where it collects.
- Sex- women more likely to develop this condition, Hormonal changes before menstrual period or during pregnancy or menopause because female hormones tend to relax vein walls. Hormonal treatment, birth control pills increase the risk of varicose veins.
- Obesity-being obese puts added pressure on veins
- Family history – if your family members had varicose veins there is greater chance you will too
- Standing or sitting for long period of time
