What is GERD? How it can be treated in Ayurveda?

What is GERD?

GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, is a chronic digestive disorder where stomach acid or bile flows back into the food pipe (esophagus), irritating its lining. This backward flow, called acid reflux, can cause a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn), regurgitation of sour liquid, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough, and sore throat. It often worsens after meals, at night, or when lying down.

GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — a ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach — becomes weak or relaxes inappropriately. Common causes include obesity, overeating, stress, smoking, alcohol, spicy food, and certain medications.

Ayurvedic Perspective on GERD

In Ayurveda, GERD is primarily caused by an imbalance of the Pitta dosha, which governs heat, metabolism, and digestion. When Pitta becomes aggravated due to improper lifestyle or food habits, it leads to Amla Pitta, a condition similar to hyperacidity and acid reflux. Other doshas like Vata (air element) may also aggravate the condition by causing dryness and irregular digestion.

Causes of Pitta Aggravation in Ayurveda

  • Excessive intake of spicy, sour, fried, and fermented foods

  • Drinking too much tea, coffee, or alcohol

  • Skipping meals or irregular eating habits

  • Anger, Stress, and anxiety

  • Overexposure to heat or sun

Ayurvedic Treatment of GERD

Ayurveda offers a holistic and natural approach for treating GERD by correcting the root cause, balancing doshas, improving digestion, and rejuvenating the esophageal lining.

1. Diet and Lifestyle Modifications (Ahara & Vihara)

  • Eat freshly prepared, warm, light, and non-spicy food

  • Avoid oily, sour, fermented, and heavy-to-digest food items

  • Include cooling foods like coconut water, cucumber, milk, ghee, and barley

  • Avoid lying down immediately after meals; walk for 10-15 minutes post meal

  • Manage stress through yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises (Pranayama)

2. Ayurvedic Medicines for GERD

Several herbs and formulations help soothe the digestive tract, reduce Acidity, and restore doshic balance:

  • Avipattikar Churna: Helps in neutralizing acid and balancing Pitta

  • Kamdudha Ras: A classical formulation with cooling properties for hyperacidity

  • Shankh Bhasma: Supports proper digestion and controls acid secretion

  • Yashtimadhu (Licorice): Soothes and heals the mucosal lining of the esophagus

  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry): A rich source of Vitamin C and natural antacid

  • Sutshekhar Ras: Provides relief from burning sensation and acidity

  • Guduchi: Strengthens digestion and improves immunity

These should be taken under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

3. Panchakarma Therapies

Panchakarma detox therapies help remove toxins and rebalance doshas:

  • Virechana (Purgation therapy): Helps in cleansing excess Pitta from the system

  • Shirodhara: Helps reduce stress and anxiety that aggravate GERD

  • Abhyanga and Swedana (Oil massage and steam): Help calm Vata and support digestion

4. Home Remedies

  • Drink cold milk or coconut water to relieve heartburn

  • A spoon of ghee before meals helps protect the stomach lining

  • Aloe vera juice (1 tbsp before meals) soothes the digestive tract
