AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT FOR JUVENILE ARTHRITIS

DEFINITION

  • Juvenile Arthritis (JA), also known as pediatric rheumatic disease is the term used to describe autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that can develop in children aged 16 or younger .
  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis leads to bone stiffness, swelling .

TYPES OF JRA

  • Polyarticular : This type cause inflammation in more than 5 joints . Also have swelling in the liver , spleen , lymph nodes.
  • Juvenile psoriatic arthritis : This type involves a disorder called psoriasis that affects skin.
  • Enthesitis : In this type a feeling of tenderness where a bone join a connective tissue and occurs joint inflammation . It commonly affected hips , knees and feet.
  • Systemic JRA : This is least common form. It include symptoms of fever and rash.
  • Oligoarticular JRA : This is the most common type of JRA.

CAUSES OF JUVENILE ARTHRITIS

The exact cause of juvenile arthritis (JA) is not known.

Other cause include :

  • An autoimmune disorder.
  • Genetics and environment factors.
  • Viral Infections 

SYMPTOMS OF JUVENILE ARTHRITIS

Common symptoms include :

  • Joint pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rash
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis)
  • Redness or inflammation in one or more joints of the body
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes , especially the neck lymph nodes.

COMPLICATION

  • Eye problems : uveitis , cataracts , glaucoma etc.
  • Growth problems : juvenile rheumatoid arthritis can affect the child's growth and bone development.
AYURVEDA FOR JUVENILE ARTHRITIS
  • According to Ayurveda the 3 Doshas (vata , pitta and kapha) . The aggravated or imbalanced vata and kapha dosha are responsible for joint pains.
  • Accumulation of ama (toxins) in the body is the cause for joint pain.
  • For increasing the Agni , excretion of ama and removal of vitiated and accumulated Doshas
  • Shodhana and shamana therapy are given.
  • Abhyangam
  • Parishek
  • Vasti
  • Vamana
  • Nasyam
  • Raktamokshana

SINGLE HERBS

  • Shallaki (boswellia serrata)
  • Nirgundi (vitex negundo)
  • Turmeric (curcuma longa)
  • Haritaki (terminalia chebula)

Dietary changes

  • Avoid spicy , fatty foods.
  • Avoiding dairy products
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Drink plenty of water

Lifestyle changes

  • Do regular exercise
  • Managing emotional stress
  • Meditations
