DENGUE FEVER

Dengue fever is an infectious disease characterized by a sudden onset of high fever, severe joint and muscle pain, skin rash, and other flu-like symptoms. It can range from a mild, self-limiting illness to a severe and potentially life-threatening condition.

Causes:

The dengue virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. There are four different serotypes of the dengue virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4), and infection with one serotype does not provide immunity to the others. Dengue can be contracted when a mosquito bites an infected person and then bites another person, transmitting the virus.

Signs and Symptoms:

The signs and symptoms of Dengue fever typically include:

  • Sudden High Fever: A sudden, high fever is a hallmark symptom, often reaching 104°F (40°C) or higher.
  • Severe Joint and Muscle Pain: Severe pain in the joints and muscles is common and is why Dengue fever is sometimes referred to as "break bone fever.
  • Skin Rash: A rash, which may be maculopapular (red spots) or petechial (small, red or purple spots), often appears a few days after the fever starts
  • Headache: Intense headaches are common and can be severe.
  • Fatigue: Profound fatigue and weakness are often reported.
  • Other Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, mild bleeding (such as nosebleeds or gum bleeding), and swollen lymph nodes may occur.

Risk Factors:

Risk factors for Dengue fever include:

  • Dengue is more common in tropical and subtropical regions where Aedes mosquitoes are prevalent.
  • Mosquito Exposure: Being in areas with Aedes mosquito populations and experiencing mosquito bites increases the risk of infection.
  • Lack of Immunity: Individuals who have not been previously exposed to the virus and do not have immunity are at higher risk of infection.
  • Age: People of all ages are susceptible, but severe Dengue fever is more common in children and young adults.

Prevention:

Preventing Dengue fever primarily involves measures to reduce mosquito exposure:

  • Mosquito Control: Eliminating mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water in containers, using mosquito nets, and employing insect repellents can help reduce mosquito exposure.
  • Protective Clothing: Wearing long-sleeved clothing and using mosquito repellents can provide protection.
  • Vaccination: In some regions, Dengue vaccines are available for individuals over a certain age.
