Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a medical condition in which endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. It is most commonly involves your ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis. It can cause painful and heavy periods as well as fertility issues. A few places you can develop endometriosis include – fallopian tubes, outside and back of your uterus, ovaries, vagina, peritoneum, bladder and ureters, intestines, diaphragm, rectum. Endometriosis is a condition that can interfere with your everyday life. It causes long term pain, disruptions to your menstrual cycle and fertility issues.

What causes endometriosis?

The cause of endometriosis is unknown, but possible explanations includes-

  • Transformation of peritoneal cells
  • Retrograde menstruation
  • Embryonic cell transformation
  • Immune system disorder
  • Endometrial cell transport
  • Surgical scar implantation

Signs and Symptom of Endometriosis-

  • Painful periods, pelvic pain and cramping begin before and extend several days into a menstrual period, also have lower back and abdominal pain
  • Pain with bowel movements or urination
  • Infertility
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Sometimes you may also experience fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and nausea especially during menstrual periods.

Risk factors –

Several factors place you at greater risk of developing endometriosis such as-

  • Starting your period at early age
  • Never giving birth
  • Short menstrual cycles
  • Going through menopause at an older age
  • Heavy menstrual periods that last longer than seven days
  • Low body mass index
  • One or more relatives with endometriosis
  • Having higher levels of estrogen in your body or a greater lifetime exposure to estrogen your body produces
  • Disorders of the reproductive tract

Prevention-

You cannot prevent endometriosis but you can reduce your chances of developing it by lowering the levels of the hormone estrogen in your body.

Endometriosis can be prevented by taking some of the precautionary steps. Following are the preventive measures of endometriosis:

  • Maintaining healthy weight-Exercise will help you keep your body weight down and maintain low body fat.
  • Doing physical exercise
  • Intake of nutritious food
  • Say no to alcohol and drugs
  • Avoid smoking
  • Breastfeeding

Management of Endometriosis according to Ayurveda-                                    

In ayurveda , Charaka Samhita mentions 20 types of vaginal disorders but no descriptive theory is available for endometrial related problems. But Yoni kanda according to madhava nidanam b ears similar features like endometriosis. It causes female infertility.Ayurveda defines endometriosis as a condition when toxins store in but do not went out under nutrition, digestion irregularity and due to vitiated doshas. The treatment for endometriosis include-

  • Virechan
  • Basti karma
  • Abhyanga
  • Swedana
  • Udvartana

Herbs-

  • Turmeric

Yoga asana-

  • Vajrasana
  • Malasana
