FOOD POISONING

DEFINITION 

  • Food Poisoning also known as food borne illness.
  • It occurs when you consume contaminated food or beverages.
  • Contaminated means the food get infected with a toxic organism such as a bacteria , fungus , parasite or virus.
Types of contaminants that cause food poisoning

      Food and water contaminated by :

  • Fungus
  • Viruses : viruses such as norovirus , hepatitis A virus and rotavirus can contaminate food and cause foodborne illness.
  • Bacteria : common bacteria like salmonella , Escherichia coli (E.Coli) , campylobacter , Listeria can contaminate food and cause illness when consumed.
  • chemicals 
  • Parasites : parasites like Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium can contaminate food and water leading to illness.
  • Toxins : toxins produced by certain bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus and clostridium botulinum can contaminate food and cause poisoning.
  • Chemicals : chemicals like pesticides , cleaners and other toxins can contaminate food .

Symptoms

Common symptoms are :

  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Severe weakness
  • dizziness
  • little or no urination
  • changes in behavior or thinking
  • blurry vision .

COMPLICATIONS

  • Dehydration
  • Arthritis
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • IBS
  • Sepsis
  • Kidney failure

  • In Ayurved Food Poisoning is correlate with "Aalsak" and "Visuchika".
