IMPETIGO

DEFINITION

It is also known as school sores. It is a common skin infection that mostly affects young children. Bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus or streptococcus cause the infection, which can lead to itchy sores or blisters, sometimes painful. The first signs of impetigo are sores or blisters on your child mouth and nose. It can also appear on child’s scalp, hairline, legs and arms.

TYPES OF IMPETIGO

  1. Non-Bullous impetigo: It is the early stage of impetigo. This is the most common type of impetigo.
  • Red or raw skin where sores have broken open
  • Developing one or more sores
  • Swollen glands near the sores
  • Forming honey colored crust over the sores
  1. Bullous: Bullous means blister.
  • This type of impetigo forms large, fluid-filled blisters that can burst open.
  • Crusty sores form on your child’s skin and skin heal without scaring
  1. Ecthyma: Untreated impetigo can develop into ecthyma. This is the more serious type of skin infection but less common form.
  • It goes deeper into your child’s skin.
  • Painful blisters appear on your child’s skin and that break into sores.
  • Thick crusts develop on skin, and redness appears near the surrounding skin.
  • Sore crust over and may leave scars.

Causes of impetigo

It is caused by bacteria that invade the skin and lead to infection.

  • Skin to skin contact
  • Skin breaks or injuries
  • Poor hygiene
  • Crowded environments
  • Skin breaks or injuries
  • Pre-existing skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, skin lesions

Symptoms of Impetigo

  • Redness or inflammation of the skin
  • Skin rash or sore develops quickly
  • Itching
  • Sometimes it’s painful
  • Swelling, tightness at the site of infection
  • Abscess with pus
  • Intermittent fever
  • Blisters
  • Honey-colored crusts

Risk factors of impetigo

  • Adults and children are the higher risk of impetigo
  • Have diabetes
  • Insect bites or poison ivy
  • Hot climate
  • Have itchy infection like a lice, scabies, herpes simplex, and chickenpox
  • Eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis
  • Compromised immune system
  • Have sunburn or other burn
  • Certain sports

Prevention of impetigo

  • Maintain good hygiene practices
  • Avoid to sharing personal items
  • Keep your wound clean and clear
  • Cover the affected area
  • Keep your child home
  • Don’t touch or scratch your sores

Home remedies for impetigo

Garlic (Allium sativum)

It used to treat viral, bacterial, fungal infections. Place the slice of garlic directly on impetigo sores. It sting a little. You can also apply garlic paste.

Avoid to used garlic on young children

Neem (azadiractha indica)

Neem has antimicrobial, antibacterial anti-inflammatory properties. Neem can be used to overcome the problem of impetigo. You can use neem paste on affected area. You can use neem oil also.

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis)

Aloe vera gel or juice is readily absorbed deep into infected skin and work as an antiseptic/antimicrobial agent. Apply aloe vera gel on the affected area. It helps to reduce the redness, itching or swelling.

Coconut oil

It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help soothe impetigo lesions, clear infection and repair the skin.

Turmeric       

Mix a few drops of water in turmeric powder to make a paste and apply it to the infected area.

You can also consume turmeric milk.

Honey

It is enriched with antioxidants that reduce inflammation and promote ski healing. Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of raw honey to affected area.

  1. Detox Premium Powder:

It is ayurvedic syrup that consists of various natural ingredients such as Khadir Chall (Acacia catechu), Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Harad (Terminalia bellirica), Baheda (Terminalia chebula), Amla (Emblica officinalis), etc. As the syrup purifies the blood by removing excess toxins it is very beneficial in maintaining proper circulation and improves the skin naturally.

Recommended Dosage – Take 2 teaspoonful twice daily.
