MANJISHTHA

Manjishtha, scientifically known as Rubia cordifolia, is a herb deeply rooted in Ayurvedic tradition. It holds a prominent place in Ayurvedic medicine due to its numerous therapeutic properties and benefits.

Manjishtha, often referred to as "Indian Madder," is a perennial climbing herb that is native to the Indian subcontinent, as well as parts of Europe and Asia. It is a member of the Rubiaceae family and is recognized by its heart-shaped leaves, small greenish-yellow flowers, and a woody stem that can grow up to several meters in length.

In Ayurveda, Manjishtha is classified as a 'Varnya' herb, meaning it is known for enhancing the complexion and radiance of the skin. It is also categorized as a 'Kashaya' (astringent) and 'Tikta' (bitter) herb, which reflects its medicinal properties. The roots of Manjishtha are primarily used in Ayurvedic formulations, although leaves and stems also have therapeutic value.

Rasa (Taste): Bitter (Tikta), Astringent (Kashaya)

Guna (Quality): Light (Laghu), Dry (Ruksha)

Veerya (Potency): Cool (Shita)

Vipaka (Post-digestive effect): Pungent (Katu)

EFFECTS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA:

In Ayurveda, the effects of Manjishtha are attributed to its taste (bitter and astringent) and cooling potency. It balances the Pitta dosha, which governs metabolism and heat in the body. Its astringent quality helps in toning tissues and reducing excess moisture or swelling. However, excessive use of Manjishtha can aggravate Vata dosha, leading to dryness and potential imbalances.
