Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is a disease which is characterized by the inflammation of pancreas. It can be both acute and chronic. Acute pancreatitis occurs in a short period of time and resolves early. Chronic pancreatitis is a long term condition of pancreatitis. There occurs swelling in pancreas which leads to severe abdominal pain. The pain goes towards the back.

Pancreas is a gland which produces different types of secretions such as digestive juices and hormones. Digestive juices help in digestion of food whereas hormones help in maintaining blood glucose levels. It is a leaf like gland present behind the stomach.

The early stage of pancreatitis is easily curable but in severe cases, there occur life-threatening complications. With nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle, the symptoms of pancreatitis can be managed.

Causes-

Pancreas is a composite gland which acts as both exocrine as well as endocrine gland. It produces digestive enzymes which help in digestion of food. Due to some abnormality when these enzymes get activated while present within the pancreas, this leads to irritation and inflammation of the pancreatic cells. Acute pancreatitis when occurs repeatedly leads to permanent damage of the pancreas. This causes chronic pancreatitis. Scar tissue forms inside the pancreas leading to loss of function.

Following are the several causes of pancreatitis:

  • High levels of triglycerides in blood
  • Presence of gall bladder stones
  • Any abdominal surgery
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Infection
  • Increased levels of calcium in blood
  • Abdominal injury
  • Being overweight
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Cancer of pancreas
  • Some medicines

Risk factors-

Some factors make a person more prone to pancreatitis. Following are the risk factors of pancreatitis:

  • Lack of physical exercise
  • Obesity
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Having a family history of pancreatitis

Signs and symptoms-

The common signs and symptoms of pancreatitis are:

  • Pain in upper part of abdomen
  • Abdominal pain radiating in back
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Tenderness in abdomen
  • Increased pulse
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Presence of fat in stools
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased rate of breathing
  • Indigestion
  • Light headedness

Complications-

Pancreatitis can lead to some serious health complications:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Certain body infections
  • Kidney diseases
  • Malnutrition
  • Pseudo cyst
  • Cancer of pancreas

Management of Pancreatitis according to Ayurveda-

In Ayurveda pancreatitis mainly chronic can be correlated to Grahani roga. Pancreatitis treated on the basis of pittaja shotha or inflammation caused by increased pitta.
