Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin enables red blood cells to carry oxygen. It causes anemia. Thalassemia affects your body’s ability to produce hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells; it allows your red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout your body nourishing your body’s other cells.

  • Types of thalassemia- there are two types of thalassemia- alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia
  • Alpha thalassemia –when one or more genes are defective you develop alpha thalassemia.

  • Beta thalassemia- you inherit two beta- globin genes, one from each parent.

Causes –

Mutations in the DNA of cells caused Thalassemia and make hemoglobin the substance in red blood cells which carries oxygen throughout your body.

 Hemoglobin consists of four protein chains, two alpha globin chains and two beta globin chains. Each chains both alpha and beta – contains genetic information, or genes passed down from your parents. If any of these genes are defective or missing, you will have thalassemia.

 Sign and symptoms of thalassemia can include-

  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Pale or yellowish skin
  • Facial bone deformities
  • Slow growth
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Dark urine

In some cases some babies show signs and symptoms of thalassemia at birth, others develop them during the first two years of life.

Risk factors-

Some factors that increases your risk of thalassemia include-

  • Family history of thalassemia
  • Certain ancestry


Complications of moderate to severe thalassemia include-

  • Infection
  • Iron overload
  • Bone deformities
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Slowed growth rates
  • Heart problems

Treatment in modern medicine-

  • A blood transfusion
  • Iron chelation
  • Folic acid supplements
  • Bone marrow and stem cell transplant

Management of Thalassemia in Ayurveda-

In Ayurveda thalassemia can be correlated as a Beejadhustijanya Vikara . The main causes are Vishamaavastha of dosha, dhatu and mala which can lead to tridosha prakopa. Pitta pradhana tridosha and ultimately the process of formation of Rakta dhatu is affected and produces Raktavikriti . Persistent production of vikrita rakta dhatu leads to various symptoms in the form of Tridoshajanya pandu.

Panchkarma treatment for thalassemia – there is no such panchkarma thearpies that are recommended for thalassemia, the ayurvedic medicines have enough properties and power to provide strength, stamina to the patient and can also ease the symptoms.

Diet and healthy lifestyle-

 Exercising regularly can help thalassemia patient’s deal with the condition quite effectively.

  • Limit the intake of pork, oysters, beans, beef, peanut butter and tofu from their diet.
  • Avoid consumption of prune juice, watermelon, dates, broccoli, raisins and peas
  • Increase the intake of Cereals like rice, maize, wheat bran, oats, and soy can decrease absorption of iron

Giloy is a universal herb that helps to boost immunity. It improves digestion, reduces stress, anxiety, respiratory system, hence it maintains overall immunity of the body.
Recommended Dosage – Take 1 capsule twice daily with normal water.

3. Liver Care Tablet
These tablets are 100% safe and purely ayurvedic formulation. It maintains the proper functioning of the liver and stimulates the growth of new liver cells.
