It is a medical condition that causes nodules or lumps to form in your lungs, lymph nodes, eyes, skin and other parts of your body. It causes your immune system to overreact and make lumps or nodules called granulomas. It can be found almost anywhere in your body, but they are most commonly found in your lungs or lymph nodes.
Causes of sarcoidosis-
The causes of sarcoidosis are unknown but it results from the body’s immune system responding to an unknown substance. The infectious agents, chemicals, dust and a potential abnormal reaction to the body’s own proteins could be responsible for the formation of granulomas in people who are genetically predisposed.
Symptoms of Sarcoidosis-
General symptoms of sarcoidosis-
- Fatigue fever joint pain
- Night sweats
- Muscle aches or weakness
- Kidney stones
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Weight loss
- Eye pain
- Blurred vision or loss of vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Red or swollen eyes
Symotoms in lungs-
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Chest pain
- Cough
Symptom in skin-
- Light or dark patches of skin
- Red tender bumps on your shins
- Growths under your skin around scars or tattoos
- Raised, reddish purple sores or rash across your cheeks or nose
Symptoms of sarcoidosis of your heart-
- Heart failure
- Chest pain
- Fluttering heartbeat
- Irregular heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Symptoms in your nervous system-
- Weak or paralyzed facial muscles
- Headaches
- Seizures
Risk factors-
Factors that may increase your risk include-
- Age and sex – this condition can occur at any age, but often occurs between the age of 20 and 60 years women are slightly more likely to develop the disease
- Family history – if someone in your family has had sarcoidosis you are more likely to develop the disease
- Race- people of African descent and those of northern European descent have a higher incidence of sarcoidosis .
Complications-
Sarcoidosis sometimes causes long term problems.
- Eyes – inflammation affect almost any part of your eye and cause damage to the retina, which eventually causes blindness, it also can cause cataracts and glaucoma
- Lungs- sarcoidosis can lead to permanent scarring in your lungs making it difficult to breathe and sometimes causing pulmonary hypertension.
- Nervous system- some people with sarcoidosis develop problems related to the central nervous system when granulomas form in brain and spinal cord
- Heart- cardiac sarcoidosis results in granulomas in your heart that disrupt heart rhythm, blood flow and normal heart function

Management of sarcoidosis in Ayurveda-
According to Ayurveda,sarcoidosis is result of kapha aggravation . This condition affects lymph nodes that are related to kapha dosha. Lymph nodes may also be affected by Pitta, which in return results in hardening of the lymph nodes. In sarcoidosis autoimmunity is involved therefore the treatment is based on all three doshas.
