What is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus? How it can be treated by Herbal Remedies?
by Dr Vaid Ji on Sep 19, 2024
NPH (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus) is a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the brain’s ventricles, causing them to enlarge, while the pressure within the ventricles remains normal. This condition can result in a triad of symptoms, often affecting elderly people.
2. Urinary Incontinence: Frequent urination or loss of bladder control, which may start gradually.
3. Cognitive Impairment: Mental decline, such as memory problems, slow thinking, confusion, or difficulty concentrating.
These symptoms often develop slowly, making it challenging to diagnose early.
2. Herbs:
• Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): Known for its neuroprotective properties, it enhances memory and cognitive functions.
• Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Helps reduce Vata imbalance and improves nervous system function.
• Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis): Aids in cognitive enhancement and reduces mental fogginess.
• Vacha (Acorus calamus): Promotes better brain function and clears blockages in the brain channels.
3. Rasayana Therapy: Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapies can help enhance the functioning of the nervous system and promote longevity.
A tea made with Brahmi or Ashwagandha can support brain function and reduce Vata disturbances.
2. Oil Massage (Abhyanga): Regular self-massage with Sesame oil or Mahanarayan oil helps in calming the Vata dosha, which is essential for neurological health.
3. Meditation and Pranayama: Breathing exercises like Nadi Shodhana and gentle yoga postures can help balance the nervous system and improve brain function.
4. Diet:
• Warm, easy-to-digest food: Include ghee (clarified butter), cooked vegetables, and soups to reduce Vata.
• Avoid cold, dry, and raw foods, as they can aggravate Vata.
• Spices like turmeric and ginger can reduce inflammation and promote circulation in the brain.
5. Brahmi Ghrita: An Ayurvedic formulation made from ghee and Brahmi can be taken daily to support cognitive function.
Always consult with a healthcare provider or Ayurvedic practitioner for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Major Symptoms of NPH:
1. Gait Disturbance: Difficulty walking, often described as a “magnetic” or shuffling gait. It may resemble Parkinson’s disease.2.
Ayurvedic Perspective on NPH:
In Ayurveda, NPH can be understood as a condition involving an imbalance in Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system. The accumulation of fluids, disturbed mobility, and mental fogginess are indicative of a disturbed Vata. There might also be involvement of Kapha dosha, which can lead to fluid retention and heaviness.Ayurvedic Treatment for NPH:
1. Panchakarma Therapies: Detoxification therapies can be beneficial to balance Vata and Kapha. Treatments like Basti (medicated enema) are particularly effective for balancing Vata dosha. Shirodhara (pouring oil on the forehead) can help calm the nervous system.2. Herbs:
