ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS AND ITS TREATMENT

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of axial spine also known as axial spondyloarthritis which causes some of the bones of vertebrae to fuse. In this disease there is a characteristic involvement of spine, sacroiliac joints, peripheral joints, digits and entheses.

One of the first signs of AS is inflammation of sacroiliac joints located between the base of spine and pelvis. This inflammation then further spreads in the spine. This over the time can result in fusing of bones and thus making the spine less flexible , resulting in hunched posture. If ribs are involved it can cause difficulty in breathing deeply.

It's symptoms typically begin in early adulthood and can range from severe to milder symptoms that come and go.  Sometimes extraarticular manifestations of AS result in IBS, acute anterior uveitis and psoriasis. It is also associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease probably due to systemic inflammation.

SYMPTOMS OF ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS

About 95% people with AS have a variation of HLA-B gene which produces HLAB-27 protein that increases the disease risk. Although all people with mutated HLA-B gene don't get AS.

Most commonly affected areas are sacroiliac joint, lower back vertebra, hip and shoulder joints or sometimes hip and shoulder joints.

Symptoms may typically appear between the ages of 17 and 45 but may develop in younger children and older adults. The symptoms may flare up or go into remission and you may experience:

  • Lower back pain and stiffness
  • Hip, joint and neck pain
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss without any other cause
  • Pain in abdomen
  • Diarrhea
  • Vision problems
