PULMONARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION

WHAT IS PULMONARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION ?

- Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. It occurs when the small arteries in the lungs become narrowed, blocked or damaged making it harder for blood to flow through. This increased pressure can strain the right side of the heart and lead to symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain.

  5. Blood clotting disorders
  6. Chronic lung diseases

DIAGNOSIS OF PULMONARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION :

The diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) typically involves a combination of medical history review, physical examination and various tests. Common diagnostic steps include:

  1. Medical History and Physical Exam.
  2. Blood Tests: Blood tests can be conducted to check for conditions that can contribute to PAH, such as connective tissue diseases or clotting disorders.
  3. Imaging Studies: Tests like echocardiogram and chest X-rays can help assess the heart and lung function.
  4. Pulmonary Function Tests: These tests measure lung function and help determine if an underlying lung condition is contributing to PAH.
  5. Right Heart Catheterization: This is a key diagnostic procedure where a thin tube (catheter) is inserted into the pulmonary artery to directly measure pressure in the heart and lungs.
