What is Ulcerative Colitis? Common Causes and Ayurvedic its Treatment

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The exact cause is unknown, but several factors may contribute to its development:

1. Immune System Dysfunction: An abnormal immune response causes the immune system to attack the cells in the digestive tract.
2. Genetic Predisposition: A family history of IBD increases the risk.
3. Environmental Triggers: Diet, stress, and lifestyle factors might contribute to flare-ups.
4. Microbial Imbalance: An imbalance in gut flora may trigger inflammation.
5. Stress and Emotional Factors: Chronic stress and emotional disturbances can worsen symptoms.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Ulcerative Colitis

In Ayurveda, ulcerative colitis is often associated with an imbalance in Pitta dosha, specifically an aggravated Pitta that affects the digestive system, leading to inflammation and ulcers in the colon. It is also linked to Rakta dhatu (blood tissue) and can involve vitiation of Vata dosha, which affects the colon’s function.
